VLC: VideoLAN – a FREE multimedia player
Okay, if you watch movies on your PC or laptop, most likely that you have this awesome media player on your desktop, and I won’t say anything. But if you don’t…. let me introduce to you, like with everyone else, this indispensable media player.

VideoLAN (or VLC for short), is free and open-source multimedia player since its first release. It supports a large number of media formats, from audio to video (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, …) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It is available for most platforms, such as Microsoft Windows, Linux, and Mac OSX.
I have tried other media players available like DivX media player. While DivX is really one of the best free/commercial media player. It lags behind to deliver of what I expect for a true multi-media player. I tried playing an MKV movie in DivX 7. The video is playing, but there was no audio. It keeps telling me to update my codecs, which I tried but still did not recognize it.
With VLC media player, it runs the video along with audio, right of of the box! there was no need for additional codec or something. It just did it!
So, if you every find yourself having some trouble playing movies on your old and traditional player, try VLC! I’m pretty sure you’ll love it, and you won’t ever find yourself looking for another.
